CO2-capturing filters for industrial emissions.
About 34% of global CO2 emissions are caused by the industrial sector. Emissions from these companies are notoriously difficult to abate because, in addition to emissions associated with energy use, a significant portion of industrial emissions come from the process itself. We have developed at EPFL a special material that captures these emissions at their source and before they enter the atmosphere.
Our main novelty comes from making CO2 size holes in a 1 atom-thick selective layer of graphene, a Nobel prize winning material, which lead to record breaking performances. This in turn lowers capital and energy costs and makes carbon capture economically viable.
