Switzerland has firmly established itself as a global leader in robotics innovation. From pioneering university labs to attracting tech giants like Apple, Google, and Sony, the Swiss robotic ecosystem is driving breakthroughs that redefine automation and human-robot collaboration. With billion-dollar innovation funds backing Swiss startups and international corporations setting up R&D hubs focused on AI and robotics, Switzerland is not just keeping pace with global trends, it is setting them. This unique combination of scientific excellence, entrepreneurship, and investor confidence positions Switzerland at the forefront of the robotics revolution.
Switzerland is the global powerhouse in robotics innovation. From cutting-edge university research to global tech companies, Swiss robotic startups and strategic investor backing, the country is shaping the next era of automation and intelligent machines, robots, and drones.
From Machines to Willing Helpers: The Swiss Robotics Ecosystem
Swiss universities are at the forefront of international robotics research, and entrepreneurs are commercializing this knowledge into thriving startups. Global tech giants have taken notice: ABB, Amazon, Apple, Google, Huawei, Hyundai, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Sony have all established R&D offices in Switzerland, focusing on AI, image processing, and robotics.
Among the most cited robotics researchers in the world: ETH Professor Roland Siegwart
ETH professor Roland Siegwart, one of the most cited robotics researchers worldwide, explains why Switzerland attracts these companies for robotics: “There is no better location for this, alongside Boston and Silicon Valley.”
Disney Research has partnered with ETH Zurich for over a decade, and the founder of Boston Dynamics recently launched the Robotics and AI Institute (RAI Institute) in Switzerland together with ETH robotic professor Marco Hutter. Swiss robotics is evolving beyond industrial automation toward collaborative systems designed to assist humans in everyday tasks. This shift is redefining human-technology interaction and positioning Switzerland at the forefront of human-centric robotics.
The Next Generation of Robots
Tomorrow’s robots won’t be rigid and complex. They will be soft, adaptive, and inspired by nature. Swiss universities are pioneering this global shift through soft robotics, which promises safer, more versatile machines for healthcare, logistics, and environmental monitoring.
Rolling, walking, swimming, the GOAT robot does it all. Developped at EPFL, this shape-shifting robot adapts to any surface with ease
Researchers like Mirko Kovac (Empa), Josie Hughes (EPFL), and Georg Rauter (University of Basel) are developing robots that roll, swim, and even change shape. Silicone fingers, elastic actuators, and embodied intelligence are redefining what robots and drones can do.
Swiss Robotic Startups Attract Global Investors
For investors, Swiss robotics offers a unique opportunity thanks to strong academic foundations and industrial collaborations. More than CHF 1.3 billion in venture capital was invested into Swiss robotic startups in the past years. Franziska Bossart, who leads Amazon’s $1B Innovation Fund, believes the next generation of robots will work hand-in-hand with humans. She has already backed two Swiss robotics startups with the fund to make the vision reality.

Investors are also eyeing defensetech as a growth cluster for robotics. While Swiss startups remain cautious due to market size and legal complexities, Alexander Schläpfer from Swisscom Ventures predicts: “Swiss robotics startups will become involved in the dual-use sector in the medium term.”
