The 100 most innovative and promising Swiss startups are picked by a panel of 100 leading investors and industry experts and are revealed at the Top100 Swiss Startup Award. This year, Robotics has 7 representative startups in the Top100 (including 1 in the Top10). We have also talked with industry expert Alexander Schläpfer, managing partner at Swisscom Ventures. Learn more about these Robotics companies shaping the future of automation and technology.

The annual ranking of the Top100 Swiss Startups has become a benchmark in Switzerland’s startup ecosystem—and beyond. Every year, a panel of 100 leading investors and startup experts chooses the 100 most innovative and promising Swiss startups. Each jury member nominates 10 Swiss startups that are fewer than five years old and show the greatest commercial potential. They assign 10 points for the first place and one point for the tenth place. The companies with the most points make it into the Top100 Swiss Startup Ranking.

Civilian vs. military
Armed forces have long been the drivers of technological development. “That’s been over since the 1990s,” says Alexander Schläpfer from Swisscom Ventures. This is particularly evident with drones: “We see a lot of civilian technology on the battlefields in Ukraine and the Middle East.” The US Army is conducting programs, such as DARPA and DIU, that specifically qualify civilian technology trends for military use. The Swiss Army has also responded: this spring, it established a drone task force. And reciprocally, investors are recognizing a new business area in the defense tech sector.

Swiss startups are still holding back, partly because the local market is too small to justify major technological development, and the export business would be fraught with considerable legal uncertainty. But for Schläpfer, one thing is clear: “Swiss robotics startups
will become involved in the dual-use sector in the medium term.”
