The 100 most innovative and promising Swiss startups are picked by a panel of 100 leading investors and industry experts and are revealed at the Top100 Swiss Startup Award. This year, foodtech has 2 representative startups in the Top100. We have also talked with Philip Kneis, foodtech expert at Zurich-based venture capital firm Redalpine. Learn more about these foodtech startups shaping how we produce and sustain our food.

The annual ranking of the Top100 Swiss Startups has become a benchmark in Switzerland’s startup ecosystem—and beyond. Every year, a panel of 100 leading investors and startup experts chooses the 100 most innovative and promising Swiss startups. Each jury member nominates 10 Swiss startups that are fewer than five years old and show the greatest commercial potential. They assign 10 points for the first place and one point for the tenth place. The companies with the most points make it into the Top100 Swiss Startup Ranking.

A lean spell
The hype surrounding alternative plant-based meat and dairy products has died down. “This segment has a lot of potential in the long term, but we are currently going through a trough that is causing problems for founders and investors alike,” says Philip Kneis, foodtech expert at Zurich-based venture capital firm Redalpine. A look at the Top100 ranking supports this theory: only two foodtech startups made it into the Top100 this year compared with seven in 2023 and five last year. “The topic of sustainability no longer moves consumers as it used to,” explains Kneis. Under such circumstances, it’s difficult to bring a new product from the lab to the store shelf. He therefore advises potential founders to focus more on existing value chains. The top-ranked startup of the year is leading the way: Geneva-based Planetary is positioning itself not as a competitor, but as a supplier to the established food industry.

The 2 foodtech startups that impressed the Top100 Swiss Startup Award Jury in 2025:

Planetary, #25
Planetary builds global industrial fermentation infrastructure to produce sustainable alternative proteins (e.g., mycoprotein) and bio-based materials.

AlpinaSana, #82
AlpinaSana offers an AI-driven nutrition-tracking system and bespoke food supplements to address malnutrition in hospitals and elder care.
