The 16 most promising Swiss cleantech startups and scale-ups of 2024, according to investors

17.09.2024 10:00 Rita Longobardi

The 100 most innovative and promising Swiss startups are picked by a panel of 100 leading investors and industry experts and are revealed at the TOP 100 Swiss Startup Award. This year, cleantech has 16 representative startups in the TOP 100 (including 3 in the TOP 10 and 2 in the scale-up ranking). We have also talked with TOP 100 jury member Eric Plan about the sector insights. Learn more about these cleantech companies on the frontline of technological advancements, ranging from PET plastic recycling and solar modules for greenhouses to biomass as a sustainable alternative to petroleum.

The annual ranking of the TOP 100 Swiss Startups has become a benchmark in Switzerland’s startup ecosystem—and beyond. Every year, a panel of 100 leading investors and startup experts chooses the 100 most innovative and promising Swiss startups. Each jury member nominates 10 Swiss startups that are fewer than five years old and show the greatest commercial potential. They assign 10 points for the first place and one point for the tenth place. The companies with the most points make it into the TOP 100 Swiss Startup Ranking.

Now is the time for the industry to get involved: it must make its value chains more carbon-neutral,  starting with the raw materials and energy used in production through to packaging. Net zero is the ambitious goal set by policymakers. “Swiss cleantech startups represent the full range of options that can be used to drive decarbonization forward,” says Eric Plan, Secretary General of CleantechAlps, with a view to the industry. Companies such as Voltiris are expanding the application area of photovoltaics, Bloom Biorenewables is producing biological starting materials for specialty chemicals, and DePoly’s technology has the potential to revolutionize plastics recycling. Plan, the industry representative, is particularly pleased: “Many technologies have reached a high degree of maturity and are on the threshold of industrialization.”

Discover the 16 cleantech startups that impressed the TOP 100 Swiss Startup Award Jury in 2024:

DePoly, #1
Every year 56 M tonnes of PET plastic is produced, but only 9% is recycled. This is largely because for PET plastic to be recycled it needs to be clean, sorted, and can't be mixed with other plastics. As a chemical recycling company, DePoly is tackling the plastic problem via its enhanced recycling technology that converts post-consumer PET plastic back to its main raw components, at room temperature, without any additional heat or pressure. The raw material can then be sold back to industry, so that new virgin quality PET plastic items can be made, creating a truly circular plastic economy.

Voltiris#6
Voltiris develops the very first photovoltaic modules for glass greenhouses. This innovation allows for double-land use of greenhouses’ surface, generating electricity with no reduction of crop productivity. For growers, this translates into improved energy independence, increased profitability, and reduced carbon footprint.

Bloom Biorenewables#7
Bloom offers a sustainable alternative to replace petroleum in current products. With Bloom, customers can match the growing demand for nature-based products and take a big step towards meeting their sustainability goals. Bloom also offers innovative products to meet emerging market needs, such as new scents, nutraceuticals or biodegradable bioplastics.

Enerdrape, #16
Enerdrape commercialises the world's first prefabricated geothermal panel technology.
Thanks to an installation without drilling, Enerdrape panels make it possible to turn underground structures, such as car parking or tunnels, into sources of renewable thermal energy for the heating and cooling of buildings, thus achieving CO2 savings.

Exnaton, #19
The AI billing platform for the energy transition Exnaton is a software provider and spin-off company from ETH Zürich that builds a platform for tomorrow's energy market. Aiming at a renewable and sustainable energy system, the company develops a white-label SaaS billing engine, which empowers utility companies to tap into new revenue streams and drive the energy transition.

Qaptis#20
Qaptis is a CO2 capture technology startup founded in 2021 as a spin-off of EPFL focusing on developing point-source carbon capture solutions to decarbonize challenging sectors, ranging from heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks and ships to industrial applications like ovens and generator sets.

WattAnyWhere, #22
Access to the power grid for 300kW or more requires extensive time and investment. In response, WattAnyWhere offers a unique solution with its off-grid and pollutant-free power generator, effectively mitigating the current grid capacity shortfall.

Neology Hydrogen, #49
Neology is a leading company driving innovation in sustainable energy solutions for commercial transportation and industrial applications. It specializes in ammonia-to-hydrogen and ammonia-to-electricity conversion technologies, transforming ammonia into a versatile, carbon-free energy carrier.

SoHHytec, #57
SoHHytec develops, builds, and operates gardens and forests of its proprietary arbs (artificial trees) and provides hydrogen (fuel) and power as a service. The cleantech company uses its innovative patented technology based on integrated photo-electrochemical devices.

Transmutex, #74
Transmutex is an innovative startup revolutionizing the field of sustainable energy through its cutting-edge nuclear technology. At the heart of its mission is the development of a next-generation reactor that utilizes a particle accelerator to convert nuclear waste into clean energy.

Freesuns, #76
Freesuns designs, manufactures, and installs beautifully integrated solar roof tiles for residential, commercial, and heritage buildings. These solar roofs are seamlessly incorporated into the architectural design, generating sustainable, carbon-free electricity to power homes and electric vehicles. Over time, they provide a return on investment, essentially paying for themselves.

INERGIO Technologies, #84
INERGIO builds clean, lightweight, and efficient power generators based on Fuel Cell technology. The technology is based on more than 15 years of research to introduce a fuel-flexible fuel cell system that could benefit from available fuels today and could switch to future energy carriers such as green hydrogen and ammonia without any technical modifications.

Plastogaz, #86
Plastogaz develops technologies for the transformation of plastic waste into valuable products, with catalysis and process design as the core strengths. With its technologies, plastic waste can be deconstructed into its native constituents and reprocessed into virgin quality plastics, which aligns with the world's ambition to transition from a linear to a circular economy.

Oxyle, #87
Oxyle is the world’s first economical, sustainable, and permanent solution to PFAS contamination. Its breakthrough PFAS catalytic destruction technology empowers industrial and environmental remediation companies in their fight against water contamination by eliminating all PFAS below detection limits, without generating secondary waste.

Eightinks, #93
Eightinks is a manufacturing platform that unlocks mass production of NextGen battery designs and materials. It reduces manufacturing costs by 30% and boosts battery performance by leaving production constraints behind. Eightinks enables more freedom of design for battery architectures that are tailored for their application with material flexibility.

SolidWatts, #98
SolidWatts is a technology company focused on enabling the electrification of industrial processes that currently rely on fossil fuels, particularly gas, to generate heat for production. The cleantech startup develops Solid State Power Amplifier technology, achieving unprecedented levels of power and efficiency.
